The Blossom Chicken is a spin on the Jiangnan hundred-flowers chicken - a dish that became popular in Guangzhou in the 1920s - that was braised in chrysanthemum-infused broth (hence the name). ![]() “A lot of the food is very soulful, rustic, and hearty.”Īnd yet the cooking on display by Chef Ming Huang is playful and technically dazzling, iterating on Cantonese and Hakkanese classics. “I have always appreciated Hakka cuisine because it’s so down-to-earth and humble,” says Grace Young, the cookbook author, who hosted a dinner at the restaurant the other week. Many preserved ingredients - salted duck eggs, dehydrated greens, dried seafood - give the dishes heft and salt. The itinerant nature of Hakka history is in the food. As a result, most Hakka live in Guangdong, and Hakkanese food has intertwined with Cantonese food while maintaining its own identity over the years. Hakka, which means “guest families” in Cantonese, refers to the history of multiple forced mass migrations that pushed the Hakka people out of the central plains southward toward the coastline. Owner Wade Li, who grew up in Huizhou just north of Hong Kong, says he wanted a restaurant that reminded him of home. Hakka Cuisine, which opened on Division Street last September, is the first restaurant of its kind in Manhattan’s Chinatown. It’s a beautiful mindfuck: Just because it looks like a chicken doesn’t mean it is. There’s an audible crust of fried mei fun - rice vermicelli - on the bottom. But bite into a piece, and suddenly you’re eating shrimp, bouncy and flecked with creamy cubes of taro. ![]() At first glance, the Hakka Blossom Chicken at Hakka Cuisine looks like a flattened, deboned bird cut into rectangles with crackling brown skin on top, two wings flanking its sides, and a head as a souvenir. ![]() You would be forgiven if you thought you were just eating chicken. ![]()

![]() ![]() Bullets were flying everywhere, I kept moving forward and firing short bursts from my BAR. As we got about 50 yards out, all hell broke loose and the Jerries laid down a field of fire with machine guns. We began the attack at daybreak crossing the frozen snow-covered field. When contact was finally made, we regrouped in the tree line along a road that fronted on La Roumiere. Patrols were sent out to establish contact. Things continued to be disorganized and contact was lost between flanking Platoons. We moved down a steep slope and crossed a small stream. ![]() It seemed to take forever to get to our line of departure. We could hear bursts of artillery fire and small arms fire off in the distance. It was dark and cold, we walked for an hour or more and were told to turn around, and apparently we were not in the right position for attack on a hill called LaRoumiere. After some semblance of order was restored, we move out a road (probably the Road from NY to Sur-Les-Hys). I had no idea of where we were and had no maps to guide us. Everything seemed to be in a state of chaos. We were hurriedly assembled and told to move out immediately and that we were moving up to the front lines. Just as I approached the beginning of the line, an officer rolled up in a Jeep and ordered the cooks to put it away. Mostly though, she keeps both debuffs on him throughout the fight without problems. Her A3 is pretty good too, even though I wish the AI would prioritize it only after the heal and speed debuffs are in place. It used to be a struggle landing the heal reduction with the epic dwarfs, but Lifetaker’s speed debuff and TM reduction on the A2 makes it easy for everyone to get in some more hits after the shield is down. I mean a quick glance at his rating and skills shows him to be an arena champ with some FW application. They are listed as top tier FK epics on Ayumilove, but I find that Lifetaker outshines both by a mile. She’s so much better than Baerdal Fellhammer or Fodbor the Bard, both of whom I’ve used for heal reduction against Fire Knight before her. I recently added Lifetaker to my Fire Knight Team, and I’m surprised at how effective she is. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Super Mario series is part of the greater Mario franchise, which includes other video game genres and media such as film, television, printed media, and merchandise. It is quite normal that different games of the same genre compete with each other. ![]() ![]() The Zoras themselves also get a face-lift, too, and interestingly look a lot more fish-like. In 3D games, they are often depicted as naked, graceful fish-people that live in a serene 'realm', and I do believe that Breath of the Wild's Zora's Realm is perhaps my favourite area in all of the game. Zora: A lot of the primary sentient races in most Zelda games draw from Ocarina of Time, which iconically introduced the Gerudo, Zora and Gorons to us, and they've shown up in practically every single game to follow. Still, rereading some of my older monster reviews, this is the one in the most need of touch-up, I feel, and that ended up with what's basically a huge rewrite. Again, the game designers had a different focus for sure when designing this game, but comparing the bestiary of Breath of the Wild with games like Twilight Princess or Majora's Mask really does make it look relatively bland. One of the things that I do kind of have a fair amount of complaints for, though, is the distillation of the menagerie of bizarre Zelda enemies into what amounts to a handful. It's still a fun game to play and one I enjoyed immensely in my playthrough, but my complex feelings about Breath of the Wild is a discussion for a different day. Most of that has to do with the departure and switching out the dungeon barrage in exchange for a larger open-world, as well as toning down the number of magical items Link can use. ![]() But Breath of the Wild, while being an amazing open-world fantasy RPG, had a bunch of wild departures from the previous formula of the franchise that I felt made it feel not quite as much as a Legend of Zelda game as I would like. The original version of this article, published somewhere in late 2019, was a bit disparaging, and having recently picked it back up to finish up the DLC segments of the game, I had a newfound love and respect for the game. Their most recent installment, and one that was critically acclaimed all over the world, was Breath of the Wild for the Switch, one of the best games ever and the game that put the Nintendo Switch on the map.Īnd.
